Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s Movistar Plus Original La bola negra has attracted more than 5.5 million viewers, becoming the most-watched film in Spain in 2026 and the country’s third highest-grossing Spanish film of all time. After six weeks in cinemas, the film has surpassed the box-office performances of major international productions, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The film has maintained the number one position at the Spanish box office every day since its release and is currently showing in 552 cinemas nationwide.
The achievement also makes it the third highest-grossing Spanish film of all time, surpassing the previous record set by Ocho apellidos catalanes in 2015. The film has also built a strong international profile, receiving the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival and Audience Awards at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), San Sebastián International Film Festival and Busan International Film Festival.
La bola negra is an Original Movistar Plus production by Suma Content Films, in co-production with El Deseo and Le Pacte, with the participation of Atresmedia. Distributed in Spanish cinemas by Elastica, the film is currently playing in theatres and will subsequently be available exclusively to Movistar Plus subscribers in Spain. The production will also compete in the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards.
