Ahead of Sunny Side of the Doc, Pernel Media has unveiled Rise and Fall of Rome, a six-part documentary series (6x52') and the latest installment in its successful Rise and Fall franchise. Following Rise and Fall of the Maya, Rise and Fall of the Inca and Rise and Fall of the Aztecs, the new series traces more than 1,200 years of Roman history, from the monarchy and republic through the empire and the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD. The documentary argues that Rome's influence continues to shape modern society through its laws, languages, architecture and political institutions.
Filmed across more than a dozen locations in Europe and North Africa, the series combines on-location archaeological storytelling with AI-powered historical reconstructions. Historical accuracy is overseen by an international panel of experts including Eve McDonald, Samir Aounallah and Alexander Mariottin.
Fabrice Frank, Producer, said: “With Rise and Fall of Rome, we wanted to do what no series has managed before: tell the complete story, from the very first kings to the very last emperor, as a single epic narrative. And to show that this civilization did not fall — it became us.”
Samuel Kissous, Executive Producer and Founder of Pernel Media, said: “The ‘Rise and Fall’ collection has found audiences in over 100 countries because it treats these civilisations with the same narrative ambition we bring to our fiction. Rome is where that ambition reaches its natural peak.”
Produced for RMC Découverte in France, the series is directed by Vanessa Pontet (The Real War of Thrones), Anne Viry-Babel (Pharaohs at War) and Marina Boyenval (The Lost Cities of Genghis Khan). Pernel Media is currently in discussions with international broadcasters for additional distribution.
