Movistar Plus+ has unveiled a new content strategy aimed at strengthening its role as a driver of Spain’s audiovisual industry, with a renewed focus on Spanish film, series, non-fiction and entertainment. Presented during the San Sebastián International Film Festival, the strategy is built around four pillars: innovation, leadership as an industry driver, proximity to customers and a stronger commitment to exclusive and original Spanish content. The platform currently has 3.9 million customers, representing year-on-year growth of 7.3%.
“We want Movistar Plus+ to be the most relevant platform for customers and also for the Spanish audiovisual industry. Our ambition is to grow through content, supporting talent, promoting new stories in Spanish with a unique perspective and offering a proposition that no one else can offer: the best original production together with the major international platforms and the best sports offering,” said Alfonso Gómez Palacio, CEO of Movistar Plus+.
The company aims to offer one Spanish film every week, combining original production, rights acquisitions and new collaboration models with the industry. Among its newly announced film projects are Una visita familiar, directed by Sandra Romero, 250 metros, directed by Daniel Monzón and starring Luis Tosar, and the next project from Paco León.
Spanish fiction will also be a major focus, with Movistar Plus+ targeting two Spanish series premieres per month. The 2027 slate includes Ardora, Veredicto, Todo lo necesario and Iruña 97, as well as second seasons of Se tiene que morir mucha gente, El Centro and El otro mundo (El otro lado). New productions include La náufraga, created, written and directed by Fernando León de Aranoa and starring Belén Cuesta; a series set in Barcelona in 1991 around preparations for the Olympic Games opening ceremony, created by Cristóbal Garrido and Adolfo Valor; and a new Original series from the Moriarti brothers carrying the Carles Porta label, starring Anna Castillo, Pol López and Eduard Fernández.
“We want to listen more, work with more talent and open the door to more stories. The Spanish industry is going through an extraordinary moment and we believe Movistar Plus+ has a responsibility to contribute to its continued growth,” said Juan Andrés García Ropero ‘Bropi’, Director of Content at Movistar Plus+.
The non-fiction slate will include El otro Chiquito, El gordo de Villamanín and Call me Bibi, alongside two new projects with J. A. Bayona as executive producer. Entertainment will also remain a key part of the offering, including the return of Ángel Martín to television in an exclusive stand-up comedy special produced by Globomedia. Looking ahead to 2027, the film slate will also include 5 minutos más, Caza Mayor and Domani.
“If you like television, Movistar Plus+ has everything. We are the only proposition that combines Spanish original production, major international platforms, film, series, entertainment and sport in one place. That is our difference and also our great opportunity for growth,” Gómez Palacio concluded.
