What It Feels Like for a Girl Lands U.S. Prime Video debut for Pride Month
ITV Studios and Hera Pictures have confirmed that What It Feels Like for a Girl is now available in the United States on Prime Video, launching in coincidence with the start of Pride Month. The eight-part series, produced by Hera Pictures (Hamnet) for the BBC and BBC iPlayer in association with ITV Studios, which also oversees international distribution, has quickly established itself as one of the most talked-about UK dramas of recent months. It has drawn strong critical praise and multiple industry accolades for its bold and unflinching depiction of queer working-class life in early 2000s Britain.
Based on Paris Lees’ memoir, the drama centres on Byron (Ellis Howard), a teenager who leaves behind a former mining community and finds themselves immersed in an underground nightlife scene. There, they navigate identity, connection and survival within a turbulent chosen family known as the Fallen Divas.

The show has already built significant awards momentum. At the 2026 BAFTA Television Awards, it was nominated for Best Limited Series, Memorable Moment and Lead Actor – Drama for Ellis Howard, alongside BAFTA Craft nominations for writer Paris Lees and casting director Nathan Toth. At the 2026 RTS Programme Awards, the series also received nods for Limited Series and Breakthrough Award for Ellis Howard, while further creative and technical teams were recognised across multiple categories in the RTS Craft & Design Awards. On the international circuit, What It Feels Like for a Girl picked up Best Fiction Series, Best Ensemble Cast and the City of Cádiz Award at the South Series International Festival 2025. It was also nominated for a Drama Award at the 2025 Rose d’Or Awards and is in contention at the upcoming Banff Rockie Awards.

BBC Drama director Lindsay Salt previously described the series as “funny, heartbreaking and life-affirming,” while Paris Lees said the adaptation reflects “the joy, chaos and resilience” of the community and era that shaped her experiences. The drama follows a classic coming-of-age, fish-out-of-water trajectory, tracking a young outsider’s search for identity, belonging and first love. While Byron often makes difficult or self-destructive choices, the character’s openness and emotional pull keep the audience engaged in their journey.

Liza Marshall, Founder of Hera Pictures and Executive Producer, said: "We are immensely proud of What It Feels Like for a Girl. From its glowing critical reception to its significant awards recognition, the series resonated with UK audiences in a way that felt truly profound. Our exceptional cast and crew have delivered a piece of television that is fearless, funny, and deeply human. We are delighted that the show has found its U.S. home, and we look forward to American viewers meeting Byron and the Fallen Divas on this unforgettable journey."
