La Bola Negra Debuts in Cannes Competition as Movistar Plus Strengthens Festival Presence
La bola negra, the new Movistar Plus original film written and directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, made its world premiere in the Official Competition of the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday, drawing strong attention from festival audiences and critics. The filmmakers attended the Cannes red carpet alongside cast members Guitarrica de la fuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas and Penélope Cruz.
The film is one of three titles backed by Movistar Plus competing in Cannes’ Official Competition this year, alongside The Beloved (El ser querido), directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, and Bitter Christmas (Amarga Navidad), directed by Pedro Almodóvar.

Calvo and Ambrossi said: “We are deeply honoured to be part of the Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival with a film that represents the values we believe in, and with such a wonderful cast and crew. Tonight is a dream, and we are incredibly grateful. This is a magical night.”
Guillermo Farré, head of original films and Spanish cinema at Movistar Plus, added: “Working with Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi is a privilege for Movistar Plus. They are two of the most talented and distinctive creators in contemporary European cinema. After the original series La Mesías, we wanted to continue supporting a project as ambitious as La bola negra, a film that brings together all the elements of Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s creative universe, this time taken to an epic and deeply emotional dimension that, we are convinced, will connect with a huge audience.”

La bola negra will open in Spanish theaters on October 2, 2026 through Elástica Films before debuting exclusively on Movistar Plus following its theatrical release. The feature is produced by Movistar Plus and Suma Content Films in co-production with El Deseo and Le Pacte, with the participation of Atresmedia. Goodfellas is handling international sales.

Alice Labadie, from French distributor Le Pacte and co-producer of the film: “We have admired Los Javis for a long time, but reading the script for La bola negra felt like discovering something truly unique. They have created a rich and unforgettable cinematic universe unlike anything we had seen before. The finished film exceeded every expectation. It is emotional, bold, deeply original, and aimed at a very broad audience. It is a masterpiece”.
Enrique Costa, founder of Elástica Films: “Over the years, Los Javis have built an extraordinary bond with audiences thanks to a creative voice that continues to grow stronger. La bola negra represents a bold new step in their career. It is an ambitious, moving and profoundly cinematic film. We are incredibly proud to accompany the film on its journey to Spanish audiences this October”.
Vincent Maraval, from Goodfellas: “It is rare to find filmmakers with such clarity of vision and mastery of storytelling so early in their international career. Cannes is the ideal platform to introduce their work to global audiences, and we are thrilled to help bring this extraordinary film onto the world stage and build a relationship that we hope will continue to grow far beyond this film”.
