Teleformat’s April Premieres See Ronaldinho Gaúcho Top Social Rankings Among Unscripted Launches
According to Teleformat, April 2026 delivered a particularly dynamic month for the global non-fiction industry. Netflix confirmed its dominance in the genre with several high-profile premieres, among the most discussed launches was Ronaldinho Gaúcho (Ronaldinho: The One and Only), a three-part Brazilian docuseries retracing the extraordinary life and career of football icon Ronaldinho through exclusive archival footage and interviews with major sports personalities including Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. The platform also introduced Funny AF with Kevin Hart, an eight-episode stand-up comedy competition searching for the next generation of comic talent under the guidance of the internationally renowned comedian. The title topped Teleformat’s ranking of April’s most socially discussed non-fiction launches.

Another major Netflix title was Hulk Hogan: Real American, a documentary event examining the rise, contradictions and cultural legacy of the legendary wrestling star. The series attracted particular attention because it featured what became Hogan’s final recorded interview before his death in 2025.
True-crime storytelling remained one of the strongest pillars of the non-fiction market. Netflix premiered Trust Me: The False Prophet, a chilling exploration of cult manipulation centered on self-proclaimed religious leader Samuel Bateman and his extremist community in Utah. The streamer also launched Should I Marry a Murderer?, a dramatic reconstruction of the real-life story of Dr. Caroline Muirhead, who discovers her fiancé’s alleged involvement in a murder case and secretly gathers evidence against him while continuing their relationship.

Competition formats and survival-based realities also occupied a central role in April’s programming landscape. Prime Video revived the iconic American Gladiators, modernizing the classic physical competition with larger-scale arena challenges and spectacular athletic confrontations. In Norway, Helvetesuka (Hell Week) pushed elite athletes through brutal military-inspired endurance tests involving sleep deprivation, interrogations and extreme physical exercises. Meanwhile, Dutch broadcaster SBS6 premiered Survive Your Family, an adventure reality format in which celebrity families are separated and forced to survive in the Colombian wilderness while racing to reunite at a base camp.

Dating and relationship formats continued evolving toward more experimental concepts. France launched Cougar Island, following three mature women searching for younger romantic partners before the format unexpectedly overturns their expectations by introducing men their own age. In Spain, La gran cita (The Big Date) combined romance and artificial intelligence in a large-scale televised experiment where AI determines compatibility among one hundred contestants. South Korea’s Rak Rak: Sense of Love proposed a radically different approach to dating, encouraging participants to build emotional connections primarily through touch, sensation and intuition rather than visual or verbal communication.

Music-based entertainment formats also emerged strongly during the month. Germany introduced Staying Alive – Stars singen mit Legenden, a technologically ambitious musical format recreating legendary performers such as Elvis Presley, Whitney Houston and Freddie Mercury through virtual performances alongside contemporary artists. The UK launched Your Song, hosted by Alison Hammond, where ordinary people perform songs deeply connected to their personal life stories and emotional experiences. RTL Germany also adapted the successful Dutch board-game-based format Hitster, transforming musical nostalgia into a celebrity competition centered on identifying iconic songs and placing them in chronological order.

Nature and science documentaries maintained an important place within the international factual market. Disney+ premiered Secrets of the Bees, an ambitious docuseries using advanced filming technologies and scientific expertise to reveal the intelligence, architecture and social complexity of bee colonies. BBC One presented Secret Garden, exploring the hidden biodiversity found within Britain’s domestic gardens and emphasizing their environmental importance.

Reality formats focused on social strategy and coexistence also continued expanding internationally. In Brazil, Casa do Patrão (The Boss’s House) introduced a hierarchical reality structure in which contestants live across different houses associated with privilege, labor and social negotiation. ITV1’s The Neighbourhood transformed suburban coexistence into a strategic social competition where families compete for a substantial cash prize while simultaneously trying to avoid elimination by their own neighbors.

Artificial intelligence and interactivity emerged as recurring themes across several launches. South Korea’s Hallusineisyeon – Haego Jeonjaeng challenged contestants to distinguish authentic information from AI-generated manipulation, reflecting growing global anxieties surrounding digital misinformation. Meanwhile, Planeta Alofoke blended live-streaming culture and traditional television by allowing viewers to influence the development of the competition in real time through audience participation mechanisms.
