During the London Screenings, the BBC Studios Showcase dedicated two intense days — Monday and Tuesday, February 23 and 24 — to launching its new formats, spanning not only scripted but also unscripted content (see the article in the Format section for the latter). Here are the latest titlesAlongside its unscripted offering, BBC Studios also presented a selection of new scripted titles designed for international audiences and potential format adaptations.
Lynley
One of the key scripted launches is Lynley,
a new television adaptation inspired by the bestselling crime novels written by
Elizabeth George.
The series centres on Tommy Lynley,
a brilliant detective whose aristocratic background makes him an outsider
within the police force. When he is partnered with Barbara Havers, a
sharp, unconventional sergeant from a working-class background, the unlikely
pairing creates a powerful investigative duo.
Despite their different social origins and
working methods, Lynley and Havers gradually develop mutual respect as they
pursue justice together. The drama explores both crime investigations and the
evolving relationship between two characters whose differences ultimately
become their greatest strength.
The series is produced by Playground
Entertainment for BritBox in association with BBC Studios and the BBC.
Death Valley
Blending crime investigation with comedy, Death
Valley introduces a distinctly unusual detective partnership.
The story follows John Chapel, once
a beloved television detective actor who has withdrawn from public life after
the death of his wife. His quiet rural existence is disrupted when a neighbour
is murdered, drawing him into an investigation led by Detective Sergeant
Janie Mallowan, an ambitious officer struggling to advance within the
police hierarchy.
Their investigative styles could not be
more different: Janie relies on procedural precision, while John approaches
crime through his deep understanding of character and motivation developed
during his acting career. Against expectations, their partnership begins to
work—provided Janie’s superiors never discover she is collaborating with a
civilian.
The series, which already has a second
season in production, is produced by BBC Studios Comedy in association
with BritBox International for the BBC.
Reunion
Completing the scripted slate is Reunion, a powerful relationship thriller notable for being written and performed by deaf talent, bringing a distinctive perspective to the genre. The story follows Daniel Brennan, a deaf man recently released from prison after serving time for murder. Determined to confront his past and seek revenge, Brennan finds his plans complicated when his estranged daughter Carly becomes entangled in the unfolding events. At the same time, Christine, the widow of Brennan’s victim, searches for answers about the crime that changed her life. As Brennan attempts to rebuild a relationship with his daughter, he must confront the possibility that redemption can only come through letting go of the past.
The emotionally charged drama, which won
recognition at Series Mania, is produced by Warp Films for the BBC.
A Slate Built on Strong IP and
Character-Driven Stories
Summing up the new line-up presented
during the event, Sumi Connock, EVP for Global Creative Network and Formats
at BBC Studios, emphasised the company’s focus on originality and ambitious
storytelling.
“This year’s slate is packed with
original, authentic and ambitious formats. From the search to find ordinary
people with extraordinary brains in Secret Genius, to the simple but
hugely impactful science behind the hit podcast-turned-TV show Just One
Thing, and the brilliantly entertaining Wisdom of the Crowd, our
unscripted launches sit proudly alongside global hits like The 1% Club, Nation’s
Dumbest, Weakest Link, Dancing With The Stars and The
Great Bake Off. On the scripted side, bold, character-driven storytelling
continues to lead the way, from the dynamic detective partnership of Lynley
and the sharp, unlikely crime-fighting comedy duo in Death Valley, to
the emotionally charged, barrier-breaking thriller Reunion.”
As the London Screenings continue to
consolidate their role as a key meeting point for the international television
business, BBC Studios’ 50th Showcase reaffirmed the company’s commitment to combining
strong intellectual property, distinctive storytelling and scalable formats
capable of travelling worldwide.
