Japanese broadcaster TBS, streamer U-NEXT and producer THE SEVEN have set the broadcast and streaming rollout for their ambitious live-action adaptation “Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem,” based on the hit manga by Eiji Hashimoto and original story by Shinya Umemura (Record of Ragnarok).

The large-scale project will premiere as a two-night television special titled Chapter: Youthful Days in Edo, airing on TBS on March 26 and 27. Each episode will be made available on U-NEXT immediately after broadcast. The story will then continue with the drama series Chapter: Fateful Showdown in Kyoto, which will stream exclusively on U-NEXT, with weekly episode drops beginning March 27.

Set against the turbulent Bakumatsu period at the end of the Edo era, the series chronicles the rise and fall of the Shinsengumi, Japan’s legendary samurai force, blending high-intensity sword action with themes of loyalty, friendship, betrayal and personal conviction, reimagined through a contemporary lens.

Yuki Yamada leads the cast as iconic samurai Toshizo Hijikata, joined by Nobuyuki Suzuki, Aoi Nakamura, Kanata Hosoda, Shuhei Uesugi, Kisetsu Fujiwara, Yosuke Sugino, Shuntaro Yanagi, Shuto Miyazaki and Hihio Iwanaga. The ensemble also includes Kento Nakajima as notorious assassin Izo Okada, also known as “Hitokiri Izo,” and Go Ayano as Kamo Serizawa, portrayed as the ruthless and formidable antagonist.

Additional cast members include Eita Okuno, Mitsuomi Takahashi, Nobuaki Kaneko, Masanobu Ando and Yuki Sakurai. A newly unveiled teaser trailer offers first-look footage and reveals further cast additions such as Masaki Kaji, Daichi Watanabe, Tomohiro Ichikawa and Sho Aoyagi.

Featuring stylized sword choreography, modern character design and high production values, “Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem” is positioned as a flagship Japanese sword-action title for the spring season.
