The short has garnered significant critical attention, earning two nominations at the prestigious Premios Fugaz: Best Screenplay for Nach Solís and Best Original Music for Sofía Sainz, whose score was produced by composer Sergio de la Puente, a Goya nominee in both 2020 and 2025. The film also boasts five nominations at the Premios Lorca, including Best Andalusian Short Film, and stands as a finalist for the Canal Sur RTVA Award for Best Andalusian Audiovisual Creation.
Following the acclaim of Olivares’s earlier work, “Cementerio de Coches,” which reached the Goya 2025 shortlist, the director once again delivers a deeply emotional narrative with a strong social focus. Piedra, Papel o Tijera reunites him with screenwriter Nach Solís, known for the award-winning París 70, a Goya nominee that also advanced to the 2025 Oscar shortlist. Solís is additionally the writer of the Netflix hit series Respira, whose second season recently debuted as the platform’s global number-one title.
At the center of the film is Mateo, a celebrated writer diagnosed with cancer, who gathers his closest friends and proposes a simple yet profound game: each must share their most cherished memory with him, and he will choose one as the “winner.” Through this narrative device, the short film traverses the emotional landscape of memory, connection, and the bonds that tie people together.
For Olivares, Piedra, Papel o Tijera is “a story about life, time, and the ties that bind us.” The film explores the evolution of human relationships in the face of adversity, addressing sensitive themes such as euthanasia, illness, friendship, and love with honesty and emotional depth. Conceived as a tribute to those who suffer in silence and lack a public voice, the film benefits from an exceptional ensemble cast, including Nacho Guerreros, Luisa Gavasa, Cuca Escribano, Saida Benzal and Raúl Tejón.
Internationally, the short has also begun to make its mark. Italian audiences have already had the opportunity to see it at three festivals: the 23° MonFilmFest – Giochi di Cinema Senza Frontiere, the Festival Internazionale de Cinema Povero, and the Sicily International Short League.
With its powerful narrative, distinguished creative team, and remarkable festival performance, Piedra, Papel o Tijera stands as one of the most compelling contenders in Spain’s current short-film landscape—and a strong candidate for the upcoming Premios Carmen.
