Netflix has officially greenlit the development of an English-language adaptation of the critically acclaimed South Korean legal drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo. The project is being developed by Jerry Bruckheimer Television, with veteran showrunner Leila Gerstein (Hart of Dixie, The Handmaid’s Tale) attached as writer and executive producer.

The original series, created by Moon Ji-won and directed by Yoo In-sik, became a global sensation following its premiere on ENA in June 2022. The story of Woo Young-woo, a young attorney on the autism spectrum with a photographic memory, captured audiences with its heartfelt portrayal of neurodiversity, legal brilliance, and emotional resilience. Extraordinary Attorney Woo quickly rose to become one of Korea’s highest-rated cable dramas, peaking at a 17.5% audience share for its finale, while dominating Netflix’s non-English Top 10 globally for six consecutive weeks.

Now, Netflix is aiming to bring this universally resonant story to a broader international audience through an English-language reinterpretation. The adaptation will retain the essence of Woo Young-woo’s journey—exploring her professional challenges and personal triumphs—but will also reframe cultural contexts to reflect a new setting and legal system.

Gerstein, known for her deft touch in creating empathetic, character-driven narratives, will spearhead the adaptation. The production will be overseen by Jerry Bruckheimer Television, with KristieAnne Reed serving as co-executive producer. While plot details are being kept under wraps, the creative team has expressed a strong commitment to preserving the authenticity of the original’s portrayal of autism spectrum disorder, ensuring a sensitive and insightful approach.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo is currently available on Netflix in over 190 countries, with dubbed and subtitled versions contributing to its worldwide appeal.
