FX has officially greenlit the U.S. adaptation of Cry Wolf (Ulven Kommer), the critically acclaimed Danish drama from DR Drama. The American version of the hit series will feature an A-list cast led by Academy Award winners Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Crown) and Brie Larson (Room, Captain Marvel). Emmy-nominated writer and producer Sarah Treem (The Affair, House of Cards, In Treatment) will adapt the series for FX.
Originally created by Maja Jul Larsen (Borgen, Legacy) and produced by Claudia Sagnatino (Secrets We Keep), Cry Wolf explores the emotional, social, and institutional consequences of a teenage girl’s allegation of abuse. The original eight-part series debuted on Denmark’s DR1 in 2020 and was widely praised for its nuanced storytelling. It has since been sold to over 70 territories, cementing its status as a standout Nordic drama with international resonance.
Sarah Treem said:“I was blown away by Maja's incredibly emotional, suspenseful, and powerful show, and I'm so honored to be adapting it into an American context. The first time I watched Cry Wolf, it felt eerily familiar. Maja has tapped into experiences that are so hard to put into words – the complicated dynamics between mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, women and power. We are just at the beginning of our writing process, and we are so excited to build on her brilliant foundation.”
Series creator Maja Jul Larsen stated :“I am incredibly proud! I have admired the great depth, precision, and sensibility of Sarah Treem's writing for years, and I’m truly honoured that she is adapting Cry Wolf. I can’t wait to see how the story will evolve with her unique voice and vision. Cry Wolf deals with the dynamics of intimate relationships, parenthood, and the narratives we all create for ourselves to cope. How these narratives unite us, separate us, and how they hold up when society intersects.”
“Cry Wolf is a true milestone in that effort — the result of long-term work to establish creative partnerships and gain a real foothold in key global markets,” said Camilla Maria Saabye Bjerregaard, Senior Format & Sales Executive at DR Sales. “We’re proud to see FX, Sarah Treem, and an already outstanding cast bring the story into a new context. We’ll be following closely — and look forward to announcing more format adaptations from our scripted slate in the coming months.”
