Baking at Hogwarts

Baking at Hogwarts
The trend of reboots and 'brand extensions', which could be summed up by the definition ‘Re-proposing What You Already Know’, is stronger than ever and, sadly, a sign of the stagnation of the times and the lack of courage of decision-makers.

The latest is Harry Potter: Wizard of Baking, which is obviously a 'baking extension' of the world-famous saga. The show pits nine pairs of pastry chefs and cake artists against each other to create massive, edible showpieces inspired by moments and themes from the franchise. Harry Potter fans will recognise many of the iconic locations, as the series was produced at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, on some of the original sets where Harry Potter's journey came to life on screen. Hosted by James and Oliver Phelps - the identical twins who played Fred and George Weasley in the films - the format will also feature other special guests from the Potter series. At the end of the competition, the winners will receive the ‘Wizards of Baking Cup’ and the opportunity to be featured in a new Harry Potter cookbook. The show has been airing on Food Network and Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming platform Max since 14 November in territories where the streamer is available. It will also be available on Prime Video in the UK and Ireland from 17 December, with the sixth and final episode premiering on Christmas Eve.

Let's put aside the tangled story involving the rivalry between Prime Video (where you can find the trailer and a couple of short specials from August), Comcast-owned Sky and Warner Bros. Discovery, and focus on the format itself. Which, as you can see from the trailer below, is visually stunning and spectacular. But formats, entertainment and the media system in general would do well to break out of the vicious circle of 'Re-proposing What You Already Know' and show a little courage and a few more new ideas.
