BBC Studios Unveils New Reality Formats at MIPCOM 2026
From The Yacht and The Big Date to Silent Attraction and Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro, BBC Studios highlights its expanding reality portfolio and the international strength of its entertainment franchises.

On the opening day of MIPCOM Cannes, BBC Studios took centre stage with its dedicated formats showcase, “Reality Check: A New Era of Unscripted Formats”, presenting its latest reality productions and exploring the changing landscape of unscripted entertainment.

Held at the Palais des Festivals, the session was hosted by Sumi Connock, EVP Global Creative Network & Formats, Global Production at BBC Studios, who introduced a selection of new titles and discussed the growing international appetite for reality formats.

The showcase brought together senior BBC executives, including Kate Phillips, Chief Content Officer at the BBC, and Ed Havard, Director of Entertainment, alongside international commissioning representatives involved in the development and acquisition of unscripted programming.

Among the highlights was The Yacht, a reality competition set aboard a luxury vessel, where 12 contestants take part in daily challenges to win money and avoid elimination. Behind the competition lies a social experiment examining human behaviour, power and status. Originally developed by Rebel Rebel in the UK, the format was commissioned by Norwegian broadcaster NRK and is produced by BBC Studios Norway.

BBC Studios also presented The Big Date,  originally named La Gran Cita, a dating format produced by Incís for Catalonia's 3Cat, in which 100 singles must decide whether to trust their romantic instincts or an artificial intelligence system that has already identified their ideal partners.

Another title attracting attention was Silent Attraction, developed and produced by BBC Studios Sweden for SVT. The dating experiment brings together singles with opposing political and social values, initially preventing them from speaking to each other. Participants must rely entirely on physical chemistry before discovering whether their attraction can survive their differences.

The presentation also highlighted Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro, the American talent competition produced by BBC Studios Los Angeles for ABC. The spin-off follows 12 professional dance hopefuls competing for the opportunity to join the cast of Dancing with the Stars, undergoing intensive workshops, mentoring and eliminations.
