English Blood
This issue of Friday’s Espresso is focused on digital-first unscripted content across AVOD, YouTube, and free streaming platforms. The reality is that today, more often than not—with the occasional exception—if you are hunting for genuine format innovation, fresh mechanics, and creative risk-taking, you have to look online…
Let’s start with the digital branded dating format Love Is in the Blood, created through a partnership between Channel 4.0 (Channel 4’s Gen Z digital and social hub), production agency Word On The Curb, and the UK health authority NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT).

The first series premiered in the summer of last year. It is built on an unusual, yet remarkably effective formula: combining the classic blind date with social impact entertainment to normalize and promote blood donation among young people—particularly Gen Z and Black communities, who have historically been underrepresented on donor registries.

Here is how the mechanics work: two complete strangers are seated in donation chairs at a donor center, separated by a divider so they cannot see each other. The date’s duration is strictly tied to the actual time it takes to donate blood (roughly 10 to 15 minutes). Host Adeola Patronne acts as a mediator and “cupid,” asking questions about tastes, red flags, lifestyles, and “types”—constantly playing on the double meaning between romantic type and blood type.
Once the donation is complete, the divider is removed for their first visual contact. The participants find out if there is mutual attraction and whether they want to go on a second date outside the clinic.

An unusual mix, as I mentioned, but a winning one. The pilot episode on the official Channel 4.0 YouTube channel pulled in over 660,000 organic views, while clips and reels pushed on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook via NHS and Channel 4.0 pages generated strong engagement. This included individual promotional cuts with over 1 million views, as tracked by NHS promotional channels.
The combination of solid view metrics and real conversions for the healthcare authority prompted Channel 4 to renew the format for more episodes in its digital lineup, which is fantastic news.
