KC Global Media Asia has completed production in Beijing on its new fantasy adventure drama VIII: Awakening, marking the company’s first original production in China. The series will also be handled internationally by KC Global Media Asia, which is expanding its distribution activities alongside its production partnerships across Asia.
The first season comprises 24 episodes of 15 minutes each and is scheduled to stream as a new Asian drama series. Set in contemporary times, VIII: Awakening offers a modern reimagining of a classic Chinese mythology legend. Revered for their supernatural abilities, the Immortals use their divine powers to fight evil and help those in need. The series combines suspense-driven storytelling with fantasy and light humor, creating a world that blends the mysterious with the familiar.
The cast is led by rising actress Zhang Wan Ying (Glory) as He Haining, Leo Zhou (Relying on Favors) as Dong Fang Shuo, and Nick Shan (Creation of The Gods Ⅰ: Kingdom of Storms) as Lu Xian. VIII: Awakening is directed by Yu Ji, an established director of internet midform series, and executive produced by KC Global Media Asia partners Andy Kaplan and George Chien. Meng Xun, who has worked with acclaimed filmmakers including John Woo and Wong Kar-Wai, serves as production designer.
Bonnie Wiryani, Vice President and Head of Content Sales at KC Global Media Asia, said: “KC Global Media Asia is looking forward to being a part of bringing such an exciting project to global audiences. Viewers are more and more interested in seeing local and cultural stories developed creatively and VIII: Awakening has all the artistry, action, mystery, fantasy and folklore that we believe will resonate widely. There is great potential for the story to grow beyond a single title and develop into a broader universe in the future.”
The production is a partnership between CICC (China Intercontinental Communication Center) and Shanghai Qi’Ai (Shanghai Qi’Ai Film & TV Culture Co., Ltd.). With VIII: Awakening, KC Global Media Asia strengthens its commitment to developing creative production partnerships, expanding its international distribution arm and bringing a diverse slate of Asian stories with global appeal to audiences worldwide.
