Italian director and producer Luca Guadagnino has been selected to receive the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, recognizing his outstanding contribution to contemporary cinema. The festival will take place from September 2-12, 2026. The award will be presented on September 8 at the Sala Casinò, ahead of the Out of Competition premiere of Guadagnino's new documentary, Joie de vivre (435'), produced by MeMo Films.
Accepting the honor, Guadagnino said: "It might seem like a rhetorical gesture to say I am honored to receive the Glory to the Filmmaker award, but it is the plain truth... I want to emphasize once again what an honor it is to receive this award, especially from Alberto Barbera and La Biennale di Venezia. Thank you, thank you!"

Festival Director Alberto Barbera praised Guadagnino as a filmmaker who has transformed "curiosity into a form of creative freedom," highlighting his ability to move across genres—from melodrama and horror to coming-of-age stories and psychological thrillers—while maintaining a distinctive cinematic voice and a deeply Italian sensibility. Barbera added that the award celebrates a career that has successfully brought Italian auteur cinema to an international audience.
Cartier also paid tribute to Guadagnino's artistic vision, describing him as a filmmaker whose collaborations with leading actors and creatives have produced some of the most distinctive works in contemporary cinema while continually expanding the possibilities of cinematic storytelling.

Known for acclaimed films including After the Hunt, Challengers and Bones and All, Guadagnino will add the prestigious Venice honor to a career that has established him as one of the leading voices in international filmmaking.
