BBC’s Springwatch Travels to Spain with First International Adaptation
BBC documentary Springwatch is set to make its first international move. Originally launched in the UK in 2005, the long-running format—renowned for its distinctive combination of live wildlife coverage and expert-led storytelling—has now been commissioned in Spain by EITB, marking a significant milestone in its global trajectory.
The Spanish adaptation, produced by Brutal Media (part of BBC Studios), will be titled Bizi Natura: Udaberria—translated as “Living Nature: Spring” in Basque. The series will spotlight the region’s rich biodiversity, offering audiences real-time access to wildlife within the Basque Country.

In the UK, Springwatch has become a flagship brand produced by BBC Studios Natural History Unit, celebrated for its ability to merge live broadcasting, scientific expertise, and immersive storytelling. After nearly two decades of domestic success, this first international commission signals a pivotal step in extending the format’s reach to new audiences.
Bizi Natura: Udaberria will run for a total of 15 episodes. The format will launch in late May with a one-hour primetime special broadcast across both of EITB’s main channels, followed by 13 predominantly live episodes capturing the immediacy and unpredictability of the natural world. The season will conclude with a final one-hour primetime instalment.

Filmed on location across the Basque Country, the series will explore a wide range of ecosystems, combining live wildlife moments with expert commentary and narrative-driven segments designed to foster a deeper, more emotional connection between audiences and nature.
Sumi Connock, EVP Creative Network and Formats at BBC Studios, commented:“We are incredibly excited to see Springwatch travel beyond the UK for the first time. It is more than a format—it is event television that has built a deep emotional connection with audiences through its authenticity, expertise, and shared viewing experience. Partnering with EITB to bring Bizi Natura: Udaberria to life in the Basque Country offers a unique opportunity to celebrate local wildlife while staying true to the spirit of the original.”

Isabel Duran, Head of Entertainment at Brutal Media, added:“We are proud to lead the first international adaptation of Springwatch and introduce this distinctive format to Spanish audiences. Brutal Media has a strong track record in adapting BBC Studios’ unscripted formats, and this project represents an exciting expansion into factual entertainment. The Basque Country provides an exceptionally rich natural backdrop, and we aim to deliver a series that is both faithful to the original format and deeply rooted in its local context.”

Isabel Octavio, Director of EITB, said:“In the Basque Country, we are surrounded by extraordinary biodiversity that forms part of our identity, even if we are not always fully aware of it. Bizi Natura: Udaberria invites viewers to slow down, observe, and rediscover this nearby natural world with fresh eyes. Our goal is not only to move audiences emotionally, but also to raise awareness—because it is only when people truly feel that nature belongs to them that they understand the importance of protecting it.”
