The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has announced that two-time Emmy-nominated actor, producer and director Michael Urie will host the 2026 International Emmy Awards, taking place on Monday, November 23, in New York City.
Urie currently stars in Apple TV’s award-winning comedy Shrinking, a performance that has earned him two consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, as well as the 2025 Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
He first gained international recognition for his portrayal of Marc St. James in ABC’s hit comedy Ugly Betty. His extensive television credits also include Partners, Younger, The Good Wife, Modern Family, Elsbeth and Krapopolis, while his film appearances include Single All the Way, Maestro and Goodrich.
An accomplished theatre performer, Urie has appeared in acclaimed productions including Richard I*, Oh, Mary!, Once Upon a Mattress, Spamalot and Buyer & Cellar.
“If the International Emmy Awards are the United Nations of television, then for one night, I’m basically host of the world! Thankfully, all I have to do is hand out statues, not maintain international peace and security,” Urie said.
“It’s an honor to be hosting the International Emmys and to celebrate the television professionals from around the globe who help bring all of us together while showing us who we are.”
Beyond acting, Urie is also active as a producer and director. He co-founded Pride Plays, an annual theatre festival supporting LGBTQIA+ voices, and has hosted Discovery+’s Clipped and four seasons of Logo’s Cocktails & Classics. His directing credits include the feature film He’s Way More Famous Than You, the short film The Hyperglot and the documentary Thank You for Judging, alongside stage productions Bright Colors and Bold Patterns and Silver Foxes.
The International Emmy Awards Gala, chaired this year by Sean Cohan, together with the International Emmy World Television Festival, is expected to welcome more than 1,000 international media and entertainment executives to New York.
The ceremony will celebrate outstanding television programming and creative achievements from around the world, bringing together leading broadcasters, producers, distributors, platforms and television talent.
In addition to the competitive International Emmy Awards, the Academy will present two prestigious Special Awards:
- International Emmy Directorate Award to Gerhard Zeiler, recognising his leadership and contribution to the international television industry.
- International Emmy Founders Award to Bela Bajaria, honouring her achievements and influence in the global entertainment business.
