On August 25, German public broadcaster ZDF made its official debut on the Amazon-owned live-streaming platform Twitch with the format ZDFtapes, introduced by the network under the tagline “nostalgia meets livestream.”
Actually, this is not ZDF's absolute debut on Twitch, but rather the first channel and experiment run directly under the main ZDF brand, focusing on entertainment and pop archives.
This experimental programme brings hidden gems from the broadcaster’s extensive archives to Twitch, offering a window into six decades of television history. Joined by the online community, host Milo Pochylsk—better known as drag artist and entertainer Aria Addams—uncovers unique treasures from the ZDF vault. He reacts live to legendary broadcast moments, inviting viewers to share memories, trivia, and pure television nostalgia.
Each episode revolves around a distinct theme, ranging from beloved childhood classics and quirky reports to the most bizarre moments in live TV history. The streams are enriched by real-time interaction with the chat, community-driven activities, and special guest appearances by public figures with a personal connection to the featured content.
Produced by INSTINCT3 GmbH, ZDFtapes is set within a nostalgically styled living room that bridges the charm of past television eras with the interactive potential of modern live streaming.
Through this format, ZDF is expanding its footprint on Twitch, carving out a dedicated space for entertainment, pop culture discourse, and cross-generational dialogue. Direct audience engagement, spontaneous reactions, and active participation take centre stage.
It is a fascinating, curiosity-driven experiment where a traditional theme like nostalgia—typically leveraged to capture older, more mature audiences—finds a natural home on a platform heavily skewed towards younger demographics. Yet, this is the prime time for media companies to test novel formulas: those who fail to experiment risk fading into irrelevance.
