Banijay Finland is developing Disqualified, a journalistic thriller based on the acclaimed book by sports journalist Johanna Aatsalo, with award-winning actor Laura Birn (Foundation, Purge) attached to star. The project was presented at MIA Market in Rome. Inspired by true events, the series revisits one of Finland’s most notorious sporting scandals, following Aatsalo as she investigates evidence of systematic doping within the country’s celebrated national ski team. As she pursues the story, she faces powerful institutions, public backlash and a justice system that turns against her, putting her reputation, career and personal life at risk. Despite mounting pressure, she remains determined to protect her source and expose the truth.

Minna Virkajärvi, Executive Producer at Banijay Finland, said: “Disqualified is a gripping journalistic thriller about one woman’s determination to pursue the truth, even when faced with extraordinary personal and professional consequences. Rather than focusing solely on the investigation itself, the series explores the profound fallout that followed, with themes of abuse of power, corruption and press freedom feeling highly relevant today. Combining the tension of an investigative thriller with the emotional depth of a character-driven drama, Disqualified examines what happens when an individual challenges powerful institutions and refuses to be silenced.”

Banijay Finland’s scripted portfolio spans television series, feature films and vertical storytelling. Its titles include crime dramas Murder in Hanko and Detective Maria Kallio, comedies Queen Heist and Supporting Actor, vertical drama Survival Sisters, YA dance drama Dance Brothers and feature film The Good Widow. The company focuses on creating entertaining and meaningful stories for local and international audiences, with an emphasis on responsible and diverse storytelling.
