ORF-Enterprise’s Superfish – Wild Salmon has been honored with the Environment Award at the 2026 International Ocean Film Festival in San Francisco, marking a significant milestone in the documentary’s growing international success. Part of the Universum Nature strand, the film was written by Kate Youngdahl and directed by marine biologist and filmmaker Rick Rosenthal. Produced over two and a half years and filmed across 18 international locations, the documentary has continued to gain global traction for both its visual ambition and environmental message.
“Receiving the Environment Award and seeing such strong viewership in Japan underscores the global relevance of this story,” said Armin Luttenberger, Head of Content Sales International at ORF-Enterprise. “Superfish – Wild Salmon shows how documentary storytelling can illuminate urgent ecological challenges and inspire international audiences.”
The film opens with Alaska’s pink salmon run, a natural phenomenon that sustains entire ecosystems, before expanding into a global exploration of the species. Through Rosenthal’s journey across key salmon habitats, the documentary examines both the resilience and vulnerability of wild salmon populations in the face of climate change and human impact.
Additional international momentum came with the documentary’s debut on Japanese public broadcaster NHK, where it drew more than one million viewers and delivered strong performance on the network’s streaming service. Distributed worldwide by ORF-Enterprise, Superfish – Wild Salmon contributes to broader international conservation efforts, highlighting the ecological, cultural and economic significance of the species, as well as the urgent need for its protection.
