Espresso Media International has boarded “Destination: Proxima Centauri” (2 x 52’ & 1 x 52’) for worldwide distribution, unveiling the futuristic science documentary series ahead of Stream TV and Content Europe in April. Pre-sales are now open, with screener delivery scheduled for Q1 2027.
Directed by Ruth Chao, the fully funded project has completed an extended development phase backed by major European broadcasters and is now officially greenlit and in production, marking a significant milestone for a project of notable scientific and visual ambition.
The series is a co-production between Somadrome and Morgane Productions, exploring one of the most daring long-term goals in science: sending humans beyond the solar system. Set in the year 2175, it follows the Centauri Dream, a nuclear-fusion-powered, AI-controlled spacecraft carrying 100 hibernating passengers on a journey to Proxima b, an Earth-like exoplanet orbiting the nearest star to our solar system.
Alongside its futuristic premise, the documentary also examines real-world scientific efforts, highlighting ongoing work by organizations such as NASA, DARPA and the European Space Agency toward advanced propulsion systems and off-world settlements, positioning interstellar travel as a natural next step in humanity’s exploration journey.
Broadcasters attached to the project include France Télévisions and RTVE as co-broadcasters, with participation from SVT and AMC Networks International Southern Europe’s Canal Odisea.
Alphonse de la Puente, Executive Producer at Somadrome, said: "What makes unique this ambitious project is this enthralling intertwining of a fiction storyline, the first human-crewed interstellar journey, with a solid, scientifically rigorous, factual approach to the present-day status of interstellar technology.”
Colette Webber, Sales Executive and Acquisitions Manager at Espresso Media, added: "'Destination: Proxima Centauri' is exactly the kind of project that reminds you what documentary filmmaking can achieve at its most ambitious. At a time when the doc market is navigating real headwinds, the collective commitment of public broadcasters across Spain, France and Sweden to a project of this scale is genuinely exciting."
“Destination: Proxima Centauri” is produced by Somadrome and Morgane Productions, with France Télévisions and RTVE as co-broadcasters and participation from SVT and Canal Odisea-AMC Networks Southern Europe. World sales are handled by Espresso Media International.
