Spotlight on TV Authors: The Invisible Architects of Television
On April 1, 2026, Rome’s Casa del Cinema will host the presentation of Il mestiere dell’Autore – Gli Autori Radiotelevisivi si raccontano, a documentary directed by Linda Brunetta and Stefano Sarcinelli. Among those attending are Brunetta in her dual role as director and president of ANART, co-director Sarcinelli, author Massimo Cinque, alongside Valentina Amurri and Stefano Balassone—figures who have significantly shaped Italy’s entertainment landscape.
Produced by ANART with the support of the Videogram Fund for library lending and backed by ANAC, AIDAC and CENDIC, Il mestiere dell’Autore positions itself as a non-commercial, educational project with a clear mission: to restore visibility to one of the most strategic yet under-recognized roles in the audiovisual ecosystem.
While producers, broadcasters and on-screen talent occupy the spotlight, the documentary highlights how radio and television authors remain largely invisible to audiences, despite being the primary drivers of content creation.

Through a series of interviews with leading industry professionals, the film deconstructs the author’s role across the entire production chain—from concept development and scriptwriting to editorial structuring, guest curation and thematic framing. The author emerges not only as a writer, but as a central creative coordinator, working in close synergy with directors, hosts and production teams, and often contributing to visual elements such as scenography and lighting.
The documentary challenges the perception of entertainment as “light” content, arguing instead that successful programming relies on strong cultural foundations. Authors are portrayed as interpreters of contemporary society, capable of translating social dynamics into accessible narratives that both engage and stimulate critical thinking. This perspective is reinforced by testimonies from Massimo Cinque and Cristoforo Gorno, who underline how no television format is devoid of values—values that are consciously embedded through authorship.A particularly significant contribution comes from veteran author Michele Guardì, who encapsulates the profession in a simple yet fundamental principle: “Study, study, study.”

The documentary also offers a historical and genre-based overview of television writing, tracing its evolution from traditional variety and satirical formats to contemporary infotainment. Figures such as Bruno Voglino, Stefano Sarcinelli, and the duo Amurri–Brunetta revisit the legacy of programs like La TV delle Ragazze and Avanzi, where satire was rooted in a sharp reading of current affairs and personal experience. The second part shifts towards more recent developments, featuring voices like Andrea Zalone and Francesco Freyrie, who discuss Fratelli di Crozza and its hybridization of theatrical language and television grammar.

Marco Posani provides insight into the transformation of infotainment through collaborations with Fabio Fazio on titles such as Quelli che il calcio, Anima Mia and Vieni via con me, the latter developed with Roberto Saviano. These projects marked a shift towards integrating socially relevant content within mainstream entertainment, redefining audience expectations. At the same time, authors like Alvise Borghi and Riccardo Distefano reaffirm the enduring importance of classical narrative structures in long-running game shows such as Passaparola and La Ruota della Fortuna.
The documentary concludes with the perspective of Barbara Cappi, whose career spans both fiction and people-driven formats—from Balene to Stranamore and C’è posta per te. Her experience highlights the versatility required of contemporary authors, capable of adapting storytelling techniques across genres while maintaining a strong emotional connection with audiences.
