MFE-Mediaforeurope (MFE) has finalized its acquisition of a 32.9% stake in Portuguese media leader Impresa, marking a decisive move in its strategy to build a pan-European media platform. By becoming the second-largest shareholder in the owner of SIC and Expresso, MFE strengthens its Iberian footprint and its ability to compete against global streaming giants.
The transaction, involving a EUR 17.3 million capital increase, positions MFE as a key strategic partner alongside the Balsemão family, who will retain control of Impresa. This alliance is rooted in a shared industrial vision to address market pressures such as advertising volatility and audience fragmentation through regional scale.
“This Transaction marks what the parties hope to be the beginning of a close and collaborative partnership between Impresa and MFE, founded on a common industrial vision and a genuine commitment to creating long-term value for their stakeholders, with a shared focus on growth within the pan-European entertainment and media sector,” the companies stated.
The entry of MFE into the Portuguese market complements its existing dominant positions in Italy and Spain. The group aims to leverage this cross-border consolidation to create synergies in content production and digital transformation, arguing that European broadcasters must align to maintain market relevance against US-based digital platforms.
Regarding the leadership and the legacy of the Portuguese group, MFE noted: “Francisco Pinto Balsemão’s legacy in shaping Portugal's media landscape is well-established and highly regarded by MFE. The continued involvement of the Balsemão family will be key in driving Impresa’s strategic direction and addressing the challenges that lie ahead.”
As part of the new governance, Francisco Pedro Balsemão will serve as Chairman and CEO of Impresa, while MFE has appointed three directors to the board to oversee this new chapter of Southern European media integration.
