Blue Ant Media is bringing The Trial of Alec Baldwin to the international market, having secured U.S. and international licensing rights to the feature documentary ahead of its presentation to broadcasters and streaming platforms at MIPCOM this October. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Rory Kennedy (Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing, Ethel, Last Days in Vietnam), the documentary follows Alec Baldwin through the personal and legal aftermath of the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust in 2021, and the intense media attention and legal proceedings that followed.
The film examines how the case developed from the tragedy on the Rust set into a closely watched criminal case, while exploring the broader questions surrounding celebrity, accountability, media scrutiny and public perceptions of guilt and justice.
“Through Rory Kennedy’s thoughtful and incisive lens, The Trial of Alec Baldwin gives viewers a revealing look at a tragedy that made headlines worldwide.” says Barnaby Shingleton, SVP, Acquisitions, Blue Ant Rights & Streaming. “The film’s extraordinary access puts audiences in the room with Baldwin as key developments unfold, offering a rare perspective on how celebrity, media scrutiny and public perception shaped the case. It’s a globally recognized story that will resonate with viewers who want to look beyond the headlines and better understand this complex case.”
Kennedy and writer and producer Mark Bailey began filming in spring 2023, after approaching Baldwin about participating in the documentary in March that year. The production features previously unseen behind-the-scenes footage and reconstructs the events surrounding Hutchins’ death, tracing the evolution of the case and the intense public attention around it. The documentary also looks at the role of headlines, social media and paparazzi coverage in shaping the narrative around Baldwin, examining the gap between the facts of a legal case and the public story built around a high-profile figure.
“The tragic events surrounding Rust captured worldwide attention and raised difficult questions about celebrity, media scrutiny and public judgment,” says the film’s Director and Producer, Rory Kennedy. “We want to give audiences around the world an opportunity to see this complex story from a different perspective. I’m pleased to be working with Blue Ant to bring The Trial of Alec Baldwin to platforms internationally.”
The Trial of Alec Baldwin will also receive a theatrical premiere in select U.S. cinemas from October 1, with Abramorama holding the U.S. theatrical licensing rights.
