There seems to be no stopping Cash or Trash. The long-running factual entertainment format continues its international expansion and, after recently returning to screens with a new local version in Italy, is now heading to Portugal. Warner Bros. International Television Production (WBITVP) has announced that Portuguese public broadcaster RTP has commissioned a local adaptation of the ZDF Studios format, bringing the total number of international versions to 12.
Titled Negócio Fechado, the Portuguese edition will be hosted by Tânia Ribas de Oliveira and will premiere on RTP1 on October 5, airing Monday to Friday. The series will be co-produced by WBITVP Spain & Portugal and Coral Europa. The Portuguese launch marks another step in the remarkable international journey of Cash or Trash, whose simple but highly effective premise continues to resonate across very different markets. In the format, members of the public bring in antiques, heirlooms and unusual objects in the hope of discovering a hidden treasure. Expert appraisers first reveal the history and potential value of each item, before sellers enter the Dealer Room, where buyers compete to secure the object.
Since launching in Germany in 2013, Cash or Trash has generated more than 10,000 episodes worldwide. The German original, Bares für Rares, is produced by WBITVP Germany as a daily series for ZDF, while France Télévisions is currently airing the 10th season of Affaire Conclue. In Italy, Cash or Trash: Chi Offre di Più has recently celebrated its 400th episode for Discovery, while the BBC has aired eight seasons of the format under the title The Bidding Room.
The format has also continued to expand through new launches and renewals. Bares für Rares Österreich, on air in Austria since 2020, moved to Puls 4 in late 2025, while new local versions launched in Serbia and Croatia the same year. A second Serbian season premiered in May.
André Renaud, GVP Format & Finished Sales at WBITVP, commented: “We’re thrilled to welcome RTP into the Cash or Trash family. Very few formats can point to more than a decade on air and still be opening new markets, but this one has a brilliantly simple idea at its heart: the genuine jeopardy of never quite knowing what something is worth, or how far a dealer will go to own it. Just as important are the people and the stories behind every object, and there’s no better host to bring those out than Tânia Ribas de Oliveira, one of the most popular faces on Portuguese television. With our WBITVP Spain & Portugal team producing with Coral Europa, we have the perfect combination to make Negócio Fechado a firm favourite with RTP1’s audience.”
