S4C has commissioned Signal, a new 60-episode vertical drama for Hansh’s TikTok channel, further strengthening its commitment to short-form storytelling and digital-first content aimed at younger audiences. Produced by Mojo Productions, the romantic drama will begin principal photography this week at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells. The series follows the developing relationship between Alffi, a boy from Cardiff, and Elliw, a girl from rural Wales, with their story unfolding across 60 mobile-first episodes designed specifically for social media viewing.
The commission builds on the success of S4C’s first vertical drama, Yr Alwad, also produced by Mojo Productions. The series received industry recognition with nominations at the National Film Awards in the Best Vertical Series category and at the Broadcast Digital Awards in the Best Short-Form Scripted category.
Conceived as a talent-development initiative as well as a new storytelling format, Signal brings together emerging writers Brynach Higginson, Mari Izzard and Rhiannon Williams, alongside Yr Alwad writer-director Alexander Williams. The writing team is led by Gwenno Hughes, known for Hafiach and Fflam. Following an open casting process, the production will also introduce several new acting talents. Gwenan Lloyd, Gabriel Owen and Joshua Romain will portray Elliw, Alffi and Tom, respectively, while Siriol Ousey (Hafiach) joins the cast as Angie and Lili Mai Davies (Y Coridor, Bregus) will play Catrin.
“As viewing habits continue to evolve, we have to be bold, especially in creating content for younger audiences,” said Guto Rhun, S4C’s Young Audiences Commissioner. “I am delighted to see S4C working with the production companies to experiment on exciting content which entertains our audiences and meets them where they watch.”
S4C Chief Content Officer Llion Iwan added: “Vertical dramas are a popular international format which reflect S4C’s vision of transforming to a digital-first broadcaster. “We are very proud at S4C of Yr Alwad’s success and are looking forward to watching content that builds on that success. Bold content that travels is key to expanding our viewing.”
