The Tech Billionaire Takeover explores how some of the world’s wealthiest technology entrepreneurs are using blockchain and cryptocurrency to challenge traditional financial systems, reshape governance and create new models of society. The new BBC Two documentary, presented by journalist Matt Shea, examines the growing influence of tech billionaires who believe decentralised technology could replace centralised institutions, from banks to governments. The film questions whether this movement represents a new era of freedom and innovation, or simply the transfer of power from traditional elites to a new generation of less accountable technology leaders.
Available on BBC iPlayer and broadcast on BBC Two, the documentary highlights how billionaire wealth has reached unprecedented levels, with the world’s richest individuals increasingly gaining influence comparable to governments. According to the BBC, much of this growth has been driven by technology entrepreneurs whose fortunes now rival the economic power of entire nations.
At the centre of the investigation is Justin Sun, cryptocurrency entrepreneur and founder of TRON, a blockchain network that enables users to trade digital currencies without relying on a central authority. The documentary explores Sun’s belief that blockchain technology can empower individuals and eventually transform systems of finance and democracy.“I have a strong belief that if crypto wants to succeed, we need to break the boundaries between traditional finance and the crypto world”, Justin says. “Blockchain technology we have today is empowering individuals, rather than organisations. I think that’s very important. I think that's also why I believe the government will be useless: because of technology’s evolvement. Everyone can use technology to do anything they want in the world, and there is no way to stop them. I think in the future the US presidential elections will run on blockchain.”
The BBC looks back at the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s previous investigations into the crypto sector, including allegations made against Sun in 2023 regarding market manipulation and undisclosed celebrity promotions. Sun’s representatives reject the claims, stating that the SEC case was dismissed and highlighting TRON’s cooperation with law enforcement agencies. Beyond finance, The Tech Billionaire Takeover explores the ambitions of crypto advocates to apply blockchain technology to government systems, elections and even the creation of new digital nations.
The documentary also features Tim Draper, the US venture capitalist known for early investments in companies including Tesla, SpaceX and Skype, who is developing his own digital nation concept, Draper Nation, with Bitcoin as its proposed currency. “Government is providing bad service at a high cost. Now we have new technology; we have Bitcoin, we have blockchain, we have smart contracts, and now we have these decentralised autonomous organisations,” Draper says.
