Mediawan Rights has secured a UK deal with Disney+ for upcoming drama series The Great White, the six-part legal comedy-drama commissioned by Australia's ABC and produced by See-Saw Films, a Mediawan company. The acquisition marks an early international sale for the project, with Mediawan Rights confirming that a major German broadcaster will also join the series, with an announcement expected shortly. The company is handling worldwide distribution alongside Entourage Media.
The deal reflects Mediawan Rights' growing strategy of becoming involved in scripted projects at an earlier stage, contributing to financing and packaging alongside producers. Recent titles backed under this approach include BBC drama Riot Women, created by Sally Wainwright, and California Avenue, created by Hugo Blick and showcased as the closing title at Canneseries.
Sally Habbershaw, Chief Executive Officer at Mediawan Rights, said: “We are very pleased to be handling the international sales of The Great White and to support a project of such scale, vision and international potential. The alchemy of See-Saw’s outstanding creative track record, Hugo Weaving’s lead casting and a brilliantly original feel-good concept created the momentum that led to the acquisition in the UK. The commitment of Disney+ is a tremendous asset for the series, and we look forward to building further momentum around the project in the international market.”
Currently filming in Sydney through August 21, The Great White stars Hugo Weaving as disgraced barrister Alan Armstrong, who is assigned to defend a dog facing euthanasia, setting him on an unexpected journey of personal redemption. The legal workplace comedy-drama blends humour and emotion and is produced by the team behind Slow Horses and Apple Cider Vinegar. The cast also includes Eamon Farren, Arlo Green, Sacha Horler, Dinasha Perera, Brigid Zengeni, Miranda Otto, James Majoos and Emily Barclay.
