Viaplay Content Distribution’s crime series Mafia is continuing to build strong international momentum, with sales now confirmed across 41 global markets ahead of its upcoming Swedish debut. The six-part drama has been acquired by a broad range of broadcasters and platforms, including TG4 in Ireland, RTL Voyo across Croatia, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, BeTV in Belgium and Luxembourg, Filmin in Spain, HOT in Israel and the West Bank, Bell Media in Canada, Canal+ in the Netherlands, and Blue Entertainment in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
The series has also secured international placement through Viaplay Select partnerships, including Magenta in Germany, Prima+ in the Czech Republic, Vodafone in Greece, EITB in Basque Spain, LGU+ in South Korea, and Cindie across Latin America. It has additionally launched on Viaplay Film & Series in the US, UK, Germany, and Poland. Recent deals further expand the show’s reach across Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas, reflecting continued global demand for Nordic crime drama and character-driven storytelling.
Set in 1990s Sweden and inspired by real events, Mafia follows the rise of Radovan “Jakov” Jakovic from small-time smuggler to powerful crime boss, alongside a police officer determined to bring him down as organised crime takes hold in the country.
The series stars Peshang Rad (Before We Die) and Katia Winter (The Boys, Sleepy Hollow), and is directed by Mani Maserrat (Young Wallander) and Tomas Jonsgården (Game of Thrones: Aftermath). Writing credits include Axel Stjärne (Top Dog) and Stefan Thunberg (The Hunters).
“What’s particularly exciting about Mafia is the breadth of international demand we’ve seen,” said Vanda Rapti, EVP Viaplay Select & Content Distribution at Viaplay Group. “It reflects the enduring appeal of distinctive, character-driven storytelling rooted in authentic European histories and lived experiences, while still feeling universal and emotionally relatable to audiences globally.”
