Young Animator of the Year UK (YAY) has opened submissions for its 2026 edition, inviting creatives aged 11-22 to submit original stop-motion, 2D and 3D animation projects. Run by Blue Zoo Animation Studio and ACCESS:VFX in partnership with Manchester Animation Festival, the competition aims to support emerging animation talent across the UK and strengthen pathways into the industry. Winning films will premiere during a dedicated awards ceremony at the Manchester Animation Festival this November.

New for 2026, the competition is introducing a Best Group Project category designed to recognise collaborative filmmaking and encourage team-based submissions from young creators. The organisers said the initiative continues to focus on accessibility and inclusion, welcoming entrants from all backgrounds and experience levels while connecting them directly with studios, professionals and industry organisations.

Tom Box, co-founder and managing director of Blue Zoo Animation Studio, said: “There’s no doubt that generative AI is changing the creative industries, and for some young people this could feel like yet another barrier to breaking in. “But we should not let that discourage the next generation of artists. Animation and VFX will always need brilliant storytellers, character designers and world-builders, the people who bring imagination, emotion and originality to the screen.”
Submissions are open to UK-based entrants aged 11-22, with projects accepted from both individuals and teams. Entries close on September 1, with judging scheduled for October. This year’s winners will also receive behind-the-scenes tours of Aardman in Bristol and Blue Zoo Animation Studio in London, offering direct access to working animation studios and industry professionals.
