This strategic direction will notably include the further development of Shoot the Book!, a flagship programme that connects publishers and producers at France’s leading festivals such as the Cannes Film Festival Market, Séries Mania, FIPADOC, the Angoulême International Comics Festival, and the Montreuil Children’s Book Fair. The initiative also enhances the international visibility of French books at major audiovisual markets, including TCCF in Taiwan and MIA in Italy, in partnership with the Institut français and the French cultural network abroad.
At a time when the adaptation sector is experiencing strong growth, SCELF is also rolling out a national training programme, supported by the Ministry of Culture. This initiative is designed to help publishing professionals navigate legal frameworks, identify books with adaptation potential, and gain insights into the audiovisual and performing arts markets.
Valérie Barthez’s appointment aligns with SCELF’s broader strategy to support its members in addressing the increasingly important challenges of transmedia storytelling.
A lawyer specialising in literary and artistic property, Valérie Barthez has held several key leadership positions. She spent a decade heading the audiovisual department at ADAGP before serving as Legal Director at SGDL (Société des Gens de Lettres) and at CFC (Centre Français d’exploitation du droit de Copie). Most recently, she was Director of the association Les Éditeurs d’Éducation.
Philippe Robinet, President of SCELF, stated:“The appointment of Valérie Barthez represents a major milestone for SCELF and its 400 member publishers. Together, we aim to showcase the vitality of French publishing for adaptation, ensuring fair recognition of publishers and authors as books are transformed into new creative formats.”
