"Il Maledetto": A Modern Macbeth Crime Story Lands Exclusively on RaiPlay
Rai Play will release the crime tv movie Il Maledetto on May 3. Directed by Giulio Base and produced by One More Pictures in collaboration with Rai Cinema, is inspired by William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. This contemporary adaptation reimagines the classic tragedy in the rugged countryside of Puglia, offering a dark, compelling tale of ambition, revenge, and betrayal.
Il Maledetto premiered in the Freestyle section of the Rome Film Festival in 2022 and stars Nicola Nocella and Ileana D’Ambra in the lead roles. Nocella plays Michele Anacondia, a low-level thug on the fringes of the Apulian mafia, while D’Ambra is Leda, his ambitious and manipulative wife who urges him to rise above his station.
The cast also features Gianni D’Addario as Bruno, Andrea Sasso as Don Duilio, Lucia Zotti as Santuzza, and Samuele Carrino as Flavio. The film’s evocative cinematography is by Giuseppe Riccobene, capturing the stark beauty and grim undercurrents of the southern Italian landscape.
Il Maledetto weaves classic Shakespearean themes into a raw, modern-day mafia narrative, offering a fresh take on timeless human conflicts.
