FOX Entertainment Global is accelerating the international expansion of its survival competition format Extracted with the launch of a new turnkey production hub at Lake Kenyir, Malaysia. The facility will be presented to international buyers during MIPCOM Cannes 2026, offering broadcasters and producers a ready-made infrastructure to develop local adaptations of the hit FOX series.
The announcement follows the success of Extracted, which has attracted more than 45 million viewers across its first two seasons. The third season of the US series has recently completed filming at the Malaysian location, providing a fully operational production base for future international versions.
Designed to simplify the production of large-scale survival entertainment, the hub features permanent sets, technical facilities, experienced local crews and established workflows. International licensees will be able to use the existing infrastructure rather than building new production environments from scratch, significantly reducing preparation time, operational complexity and costs.
"Extracted has all the ingredients of a universally resonant format: a powerful premise, stunning visuals, unforgettable family dynamics, and incredibly high stakes," said Prentiss Fraser, President, FOX Entertainment Global. “The infrastructure we’ve built in this Malaysia hub accelerates the series’ international expansion, offering licensees the infrastructure and expertise to create their own versions more efficiently, while delivering the scale and intensity that make the show so compelling.”
Located in the wilderness surrounding Lake Kenyir, the production site combines a challenging natural environment, home to wildlife including pythons, with access to transportation, accommodation and medical services. Malaysia also offers experienced English-speaking production crews and financial incentives of up to 30% on qualifying production expenditure. Additional incentives may be available for post-production work carried out in Australia.
The facility is equipped with an extensive camera network, which FOX says exceeds the number of cameras used to cover the Super Bowl, enabling producers to capture survival challenges and emotional family interactions on a cinematic scale.
Extracted follows ordinary contestants attempting to survive alone in a remote wilderness without training, supplies or contact with the outside world. Meanwhile, their family members monitor their experience from a separate headquarters and face a crucial decision: allow their loved ones to continue competing or press the "EXTRACT" button, immediately ending their participation and eliminating their chance of winning the grand prize.
