SIC has announced the production of Avenida Portugal, the Portuguese adaptation of Globo’s internationally successful Brazilian drama Avenida Brasil. The new series was unveiled during SIC’s annual fall upfront presentation and is set to premiere in early 2027.

Originally broadcast by TV Globo in 2012, Avenida Brasil became one of Brazil’s most successful and widely exported telenovelas, reaching audiences in numerous international markets.

Following the strong performance of Chapters of Life (based on Manoel Carlo’s “Pages of Life”), which is currently available on SIC, OPTO and Prime Video, Avenida Portugal will be SIC’s second major adaptation of a Globo success, as part of the revisited long-running historic partnership between the two leading networks.

 
Renowned actor José Condessa (Turn of the Tide, Honeyjoon, Strange Way of Life) is the first name confirmed for the cast. The actor will portray the character Jorginho/Batata at a time when his career is taking off both nationally and internationally. For Daniel Oliveira, SIC’s General Director of Entertainment: “It’s a tremendous pleasure to have José Condessa on board. He is an actor with incredible talent, a strong work ethic, and the ability to rise to any challenge. His presence in “Avenida Portugal” reflects the ambition we have for this project and our desire to bring together the best talent to tell a great story.”

The original Globo hit follows the story of Rita, a young girl whose life is shattered after the death of her father, Genésio. Raised with love and care, Rita sees her world turned upside down since her father married Carminha, an ambitious and manipulative woman. When Rita's father dies accidentally and prematurely in scheme directly related to his new wife, Carminha and her lover, Max, send the young girl off to live in a landfill. Years later, in a quest for justice, Rita becomes Nina and returns determined to get her revenge on Carminha.

Consistently breaking audience records, Avenida Brasil became a global phenomenon and one of the most successful telenovelas in television history. Recently it was adapted as the Turkish drama “Leyla” and before that it was distributed to more than 100 markets worldwide, reaching audiences across Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

 
Now, SIC's adaptation aims to bring this iconic story to Portuguese audiences through a locally produced version tailored to its national market, whilst maintaining its universal appeal. With “Avenida Portugal”, SIC continues to strengthen its relationship with TV Globo and reinforce its commitment to delivering premium scripted content that combines proven global storytelling with local talent and cultural relevance.
