Mediaset Enters the Microdrama Space with New Vertical Series Hub on Mediaset Infinity
Mediaset is the latest major European broadcaster to embrace the rapidly expanding microdrama trend, launching a dedicated vertical-fiction section on its streaming platform Mediaset Infinity. The company announced that Mediaset Infinity has introduced a new hub entirely devoted to microdramas, making a selection of short-form vertical series available free of charge to Italian audiences.

Designed primarily for smartphone viewing, microdramas are serialized stories told through episodes lasting only a few minutes, usually combining fast-paced storytelling, heightened emotions and frequent twists. The format has developed into a major digital-content phenomenon internationally, particularly across Asian markets, while increasingly attracting the attention of European broadcasters, producers and streaming platforms.

The new “MICRODRAMA” section launches with six original international series, with Mediaset planning to expand the catalogue by adding one new title every week.Among the international titles are several series spanning romance, thriller, crime and legal drama. The slate includes Too Young to Love Me, a romance centred on an age-gap relationship; Unmasked – Nessuno è innocente, described as a high-tension thriller; and In sua difesa, a legal drama combining crime elements with psychological drama.Mediaset is also looking at its own catalogue as a source of content for the emerging format. Two established Mediaset fiction properties, Il peccato e la vergogna, starring Gabriel Garko, and Rosy Abate, starring Giulia Michelini, will be reworked for vertical viewing. According to Mediaset, the adaptations will involve dedicated editorial and editing work aimed at reshaping the original material for the shorter, mobile-first narrative structure.

The initiative is particularly significant because it shows how the microdrama model is moving beyond digital-native production. Alongside acquiring content originally conceived for vertical consumption, traditional broadcasters are beginning to explore how existing long-form IP can be repackaged and reformatted for mobile audiences. For Mediaset, the launch represents another step in the evolution of Mediaset Infinity from catch-up and streaming platform into a broader digital entertainment environment capable of experimenting with viewing habits emerging outside traditional television. The move also confirms the growing interest surrounding vertical drama within the international content industry.

Once predominantly associated with dedicated mobile apps and Asian platforms, microdramas are increasingly entering the strategies of established broadcasters and media groups, which are testing both original productions and adaptations of existing libraries. With its new dedicated section, Mediaset now joins the expanding group of traditional media companies experimenting with short-form vertical storytelling, signalling that microdramas are becoming difficult for the mainstream television business to ignore.
