The drama, starring Haggard (Boat Story, Back to Life) alongside Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us, Time), will travel across North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand following its UK debut on Channel 4.
The latest deals follow the announcement that STARZ has boarded Maya as North American co-producer. In Germany, ARD Degeto Film has acquired the series for public broadcaster ARD, while Movistar Plus has taken rights for Spain and Spanish-speaking Andorra.
Canal+ has acquired the thriller for France and French-speaking territories for POLAR+, while further European deals include TV 2 in Norway, TV4 in Sweden, NPO in the Netherlands, Antena TV Group in Romania for streaming service AntenaPLAY, Hot and Yes TV in Israel, and Sýn hf in Iceland.
In Australia, Foxtel Group has acquired broadcast rights for Foxtel and BINGE, while Sky has picked up the series in New Zealand.
“After the successful partnership on the acclaimed drama Back to Life, it's a privilege to announce these further pre-sales for Daisy Haggard and Two Brothers Pictures’ *Maya*,” said Maartje Horchner, EVP Content at All3Media International. She highlighted the drama’s focus on the relationship between a mother and daughter navigating new lives in witness protection, alongside themes including identity, family and predatory male behaviour.
Filmed entirely on location in Scotland, Maya is produced by Two Brothers Pictures, the company behind The Tourist, Fleabag and The Assassin. Haggard is also making her directorial debut on the project, co-directing alongside Jamie Donoughue (Doctor Who, The Last Kingdom).
The psychological thriller follows Anna, played by Haggard, a determined single mother who is forced into witness protection with her teenage daughter Maya, played by Ramsey, after facing a life-threatening danger.
Leaving London behind, the pair assume new identities and relocate to a small rural town in Scotland. As they struggle to adapt to their new lives, their past catches up with them when two hitmen begin tracking them down, while another dangerous figure continues to pose a threat.
Combining psychological thriller elements with dark comedy, the series explores family, love and predatory male behaviour, with the mother-daughter relationship at the heart of the story.
The ensemble cast also includes Tobias Menzies (The Crown, F1), Ben Chaplin (September 5, The Dig), Raphel Famotibe, Josie Walker, Harriet Walter (Succession, Ted Lasso), Stuart Bowman, Tom Courtenay, Kiran Sonia Sawar, Serena Manteghi, Archie Backhouse, Paul Blair, Sonny Poon Tip, Finlay Shack, Max Fincham, Ash Hunter, Harry Hadden-Paton, Tori Allen-Martin and Isabele Derosa.
Maya is produced by Two Brothers Pictures, an All3Media company, in association with All3Media International. Haggard serves as creator, writer and executive producer, alongside executive producers Harry and Jack Williams, Sarah Hammond, Alex Mercer and Daisy Mount for Two Brothers Pictures.
Kenny Tanner serves as producer, with Jamie Donoughue co-directing and serving as co-executive producer. Si Bell is Director of Photography and Shaheen Baig is Casting Director. Gemma Boswell is Commissioning Editor for Channel 4.
