The BBC has unveiled the first phase of a cost-saving programme aimed at delivering £500 million in efficiencies over the next three years, confirming the closure of 550 roles across its News, Nations and Content divisions by the start of fiscal year 2027/28. The measures announced are expected to generate approximately £160 million in savings, representing nearly one-third of the broadcaster’s overall target. The wider plan is expected to reduce the BBC’s workforce by between 1,800 and 2,000 positions and lower costs by 10% over the next three years.
Within BBC Content, the broadcaster is targeting at least £100 million in recurring annual savings by the end of 2027/28. The division will reduce around 100 roles by the end of the current financial year, cut commissioning expenditure, and review its television channel and radio portfolio as audiences continue shifting to digital platforms. The BBC also plans to reduce between 100 and 150 hours of original programming across commissioning genres and trim between 350 and 400 hours of audio content while protecting key daily programmes.
The Nations division is expected to deliver £33 million in savings by 2027/28, with around 250 roles affected in the first phase. Planned reductions include approximately 50 positions in Wales, up to 50 in Northern Ireland, up to 60 in Scotland and around 90 across BBC Local operations.
BBC News will generate around £25 million in savings through the current proposals, resulting in a net reduction of about 200 roles. The news division is targeting at least £51 million in cost reductions by next April, with additional restructuring measures expected to be announced in the coming months.
The BBC said voluntary redundancy programmes will be available, although compulsory redundancies remain a possibility.
The restructuring is being guided by three priorities: maintaining content with the greatest audience value and impact, aligning investment with changing audience consumption habits, and simplifying operations by reducing duplication, clarifying accountability and accelerating decision-making. As part of the plan, the broadcaster intends to reduce the number of senior leadership positions by at least 10%. Further cost-saving measures across the BBC’s remaining divisions, including corporate functions where around 700 roles are expected to close, will be announced in the coming months.
