Set during the turbulent years of World War II, the story follows Mario Tobino, a psychiatrist and poet working at the Maggiano women’s asylum near Lucca. Upon returning from the Libyan front, Tobino introduces a revolutionary approach to mental health, choosing empathy and understanding over the violent methods of the era, such as electroshock therapy. His professional and personal world is upended by the arrival of Margherita Lenzi, a young woman committed to the asylum by her husband against her will. Suspecting that her confinement is a cover for abuse and financial greed rather than actual illness, Tobino launches a personal investigation. As he fights for the truth, he finds himself torn between his growing connection with Margherita and the reappearance of Paola Levi, a former flame who has returned as a courageous partisan messenger.
