Fremantle has confirmed the sale of its true-crime documentary feature, "Whatever It Takes: Inside the eBay Scandal", to Channel 4 for its UK debut in 2026.
The production has also secured several new international broadcast partners, including ZDF in Germany, ORF in Austria, Al Jazeera for the MENA region, and NRK in Norway. These deals follow successful launches in markets such as Australia via ABC, Canada through Paramount Streaming and Bell Media, and various platforms across Belgium, Greece, Israel, Turkey, and Hong Kong.
The film provides an in-depth look at a notorious corporate scandal involving stalking and espionage directed at an ordinary couple. While a significant civil trial, Steiner v eBay et al, was set to commence in Boston on March 2, 2026, naming former CEO Devin Wenig and other executives as defendants, a settlement was reached just days prior to the court date.
The narrative centers on David and Ina Steiner, who operated an e-commerce blog in 2019 and became the targets of a disturbing intimidation campaign. The harassment escalated from digital threats to the delivery of terrifying items to their home, including live insects and funeral wreaths. An FBI investigation eventually linked these actions back to employees within eBay.
The documentary, directed by Jenny Carchman and produced by Allyson Luchak for Big Pond Films alongside Ben Travers, examines themes of Silicon Valley hubris and corporate ethics, highlighting the lengths to which major tech firms might go to safeguard their image. Fremantle is managing all global sales for the project.
Jamie Lynn, EVP Co-Production & Distribution, EMEA, Commercial and International, Fremantle, said: “'Whatever It Takes: Inside the eBay Scandal' is a remarkable story that shines a light on the real power dynamics inside major corporations and how they can infiltrate our digital lives. Jenny Carchman and her team have crafted a gripping investigation that uncovers a shocking corporate scandal while never losing sight of the human cost behind the headlines. We are proud to be partnering with an outstanding group of international broadcasters and streamers, which speaks to the film’s relevance and reach. We are delighted to now bring it to UK audiences on Channel 4.”
