PBS KIDS will debut the third season of the Emmy-nominated animated series "Alma’s Way" on January 19. Produced by Fred Rogers Productions and created by Sonia Manzano (Maria from Sesame Street), the new season launches with three standout episodes highlighting Black cowboy culture, creative self-expression, and iconic New York City food.
The season opener features “Cowboy Howard” and “Junior’s Hair Salon.” “Cowboy Howard” introduces young audiences to the often-overlooked history and cultural impact of Black cowboys in the Bronx and across the United States.“Junior’s Hair Salon,” inspired by Manzano’s childhood experiences in Bronx salons, explores hair as a form of self-expression, celebrating different textures, styles, and identities.
To ensure authenticity, Fred Rogers Productions collaborated closely on “Cowboy Howard” with Aisha McElroy of the Black Cowboy Coalition. McElroy founded the organization after uncovering her own family’s legacy as farmers, ranchers, and cowboys, and now works to raise awareness and restore recognition of Black cowboy history and culture, both past and present.
