Fremantle has revealed the new documentary “The Life Of St Peter” from Stand By Me productions (a Fremantle company), presented by Oscar-winner Roberto Benigni, dedicated to exploring the life and enduring influence of Saint Peter, one of Christianity’s foundational figures.
“The Life Of St Peter” is created in partnership with the Vatican for the Jubilee year and was filmed across significant locations in the Vatican and Rome. With exceptional access to major religious and archaeological landmarks, Benigni walks viewers through St. Peter’s Dome, the Basilica, The Vatican Necropolis, and its grottos and gardens, bringing his signature warmth and narrative style to the project.
The documentary will debut on December 10 in Italy, airing on Rai 1 as a feature-length primetime event. Narrated from the heart of Vatican City—the site of Saint Peter’s martyrdom—the film retraces his profound impact on the formation of the early Church and his lasting prominence as the first Pope, portraying his evolution from impulsive fisherman to a central figure of faith.
Blending themes of spirituality, art, and culture, the production offers a visually striking showcase of Roman and Vatican masterpieces. Audiences are taken on an evocative journey through centuries of history, architecture, and devotion, creating a compelling tribute to one of Christianity’s most significant individuals.
Roberto Benigni said of the project: “While I was preparing this work about Peter, I fell in love… I completely fell in love with Peter…” while Stand By Me CEO Simona Ercolani described the production as “an extraordinary privilege,” and Mark Reynolds, Fremantle’s Head of Global Documentaries and Factual, emphasized its powerful storytelling. The Life of St. Peter will air on December 10 on Rai 1, with Fremantle managing international sales, including a 3x45’ version.
