Reti Televisive Italiane (RTI) and Medusa Film have filed a lawsuit before the Civil Court of Rome against Perplexity AI Inc., a U.S. company operating in the field of generative artificial intelligence.
FIRST COPYRIGHT LAWSUIT IN ITALY INVOLVING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
This is the first legal action in Italy aimed at challenging alleged copyright infringements related to the use of artificial intelligence.
According to the two Mediaset Group companies, Perplexity used numerous audiovisual and cinematic works owned by them, at scale and without authorization, to train its artificial intelligence systems. RTI and Medusa argue that such conduct constitutes a violation of copyright and related rights.
In their petition, RTI and Medusa request the Court to declare the illicit nature of Perplexity’s conduct, halt any further unauthorized use of their content, and order Perplexity AI to compensate for the damages suffered. They also seek the imposition of a daily penalty in the event of future violations.
