Renate Ranzi Leads IDM Südtirol with New Vision for TV Industry
During the fourth edition of the AVPSummit, held at the prestigious Kurhaus in Merano from July 21 to 23, Formatbiz had the opportunity to meet Renate Nadia Ranzi, recently appointed Head of IDM Film Commission Südtirol. In an exclusive interview, Ranzi shared her strategic vision for the future of the South Tyrolean audiovisual sector and reflected on the region’s growing role in the international TV and film industry.

Renate Ranzi, who has been part of IDM since 2016 in various strategic and creative roles, now leads the Film Commission with a clear mission: to strengthen the region’s positioning as an international production hub, attract high-quality projects, and continue nurturing talent and partnerships. “South Tyrol is not just a location — it’s a place of dialogue between cultures, languages, and creative industries,” she told us. “Our job is to create opportunities where producers and creators feel supported — financially, logistically, and culturally.”

Ranzi underlined the importance of direct engagement with producers, which remains a cornerstone of IDM’s funding strategy. “Being present at events like the AVP Summit, meeting producers face to face, listening to their stories and needs, helps us shape not just funding policy, but a real collaborative environment. We believe in shared growth.”

In the course of the interview, Ranzi also mentioned some of the most impactful series funded by IDM in recent years — highlighting Netflix’s supernatural thriller Curon and the new historical crime drama Von Fock, a major co-production involving Estonia, Italy, and Latvia. Both titles were recently celebrated at a special gala evening held at Schloss Freudenstein castle. During the elegant award ceremony, Curon and Von Fock were honored with the Maxime Award, recognizing excellence in storytelling and the region’s contribution to international production.

“These shows are proof that South Tyrol can support ambitious, globally minded series while keeping a strong link to the territory,” Ranzi said. “Curon made the submerged bell tower at Lake Resia a symbol for mystery lovers worldwide, while Von Fock brings historical suspense into a European co-production framework that reflects our border-crossing spirit.”

As the AVP Summit closed with strong participation from international producers, platforms, and funding bodies, the message was clear: IDM Südtirol is ready to scale up, building on its success and positioning South Tyrol not only as a breathtaking backdrop — but as a strategic engine for scripted and unscripted creativity.
