Big Brother's Complex French Stories

Big Brother's Complex French Stories
The story of Big Brother in France is somewhat complicated. The first official adaptation was Loft Story, which aired on M6 for two seasons in 2001 and 2002. Even the title is unusual: as far as I know, France is the only country to choose a completely different one with no connection to the original 'Orwellian' title. Then, from 2007 to 2011, the French commercial broadcaster TF1 aired Secret Story. While not a direct adaptation of the Big Brother franchise, the show shares an identical concept and incorporates its own game mechanics. It is also produced and owned by Endemol Shine Group/Banijay, the production company behind Big Brother; and the title also explicitly refers to Loft Story.

Secret Story was rebooted on the same channel last year after a seven-year hiatus. There were high expectations for this new season. However, the ratings failed to meet these. Broadcast at 5:30pm on TF1, the daily show attracted an average of 930,000 viewers, representing a 10.3% audience share. Although the launch episode attracted 783,000 viewers, peaking at 1.6 million, these figures fell short of the show's historical performance.
Now Secret Story returns for a thirteenth season but with a different broadcast strategy. The launch is scheduled for Tuesday, June 10 at 23:30 p.m. on TF1, in the second part of the evening after Koh-Lanta, with Christophe Beaugrand as presenter. The opening evening, broadcast live, will welcome the new inhabitants of the “House of Secrets” version 2025. The following day, however, the programme will switch to TFX, where the daily episodes will air from Monday to Friday at 7.05pm. Starting on Thursday 19 June, a live primetime segment at 9.05pm every Thursday evening will allow viewers to follow the weekly eliminations. In addition, TF1+ will provide live coverage of the Secret House every evening from 9 p.m. to midnight.
By focusing regular broadcasts on TFX, a more targeted (and smaller) channel, and reserving TF1 for one-off events like the launch, the production company hopes to win back audiences while controlling costs.
The result of the experiment will be revealed in due course.
