The Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2025 pays tribute to Hungary’s long and vibrant history of animation, while also celebrating the remarkable dynamism of its contemporary creators. This year’s special focus marks not only Hungary's creative legacy, but also its exciting present, as a new generation of filmmakers garners global recognition.
Hungarian animation has evolved through 110 years of artistry, resilience, and innovation, weathering political and cultural shifts without losing its distinct voice. The festival’s tribute was born out of inspiring exchanges over the years, culminating in this comprehensive homage to a country whose animated storytelling continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
Since 2020, Hungary’s National Film Institute (NFI) has overseen the country’s entire audiovisual sector, providing consistent support across all formats – from feature films to shorts, TV, web series, and professional training. This institutional backing has nurtured a thriving creative ecosystem and facilitated the emergence of a new generation of internationally acclaimed animators.
"The rich history of Hungarian animation has never wavered," noted Marcel Jean, Artistic Director of Annecy Festival. "Over the past twenty years, student films announced the arrival of new talent, while recent successes from filmmakers such as Flóra Anna Buda (27), Balázs Turai (Amok), Nadja Andrasev (Symbiosis), and Áron Gauder (Four Souls of Coyote) reflect both the creative vitality and originality of Hungarian animation today."
Annecy 2025 will also benefit from the major digitization and restoration efforts spearheaded by the NFI, allowing classic Hungarian animated films to be showcased in optimal quality for international audiences.
