Unicorns, the latest film by Italian director Michela Andreozzi, will make its national premiere as the opening title of the 55th Giffoni Film Festival, ahead of its theatrical release on July 18 through Vision Distribution.
The movie explores the challenges of parenting in today’s world and stars Edoardo Pesce, Valentina Lodovini, and newcomer Daniele Scardini in his first screen appearance. The cast also includes Lino Musella, Thony, Donatella Finocchiaro, and Paola Tiziana Cruciani.
“I don’t have children of my own, but I’m an aunt and a friend—I consider all young people my children, in a way,” said director Michela Andreozzi. “With this film, I wanted to explore the role of parental figures in the delicate task of guiding children, especially when they seek understanding and support for choices that may unsettle, surprise, or even challenge social conventions. In short, when they deviate from the expectations we’ve projected onto them. It’s a journey that requires courage, because it forces us as adults to rethink our positions and unconditionally embrace their desires. Perhaps that’s the bravest way to show love.”
Produced by Arturo Paglia and Isabella Cocuzza for Paco Cinematografica, UNICORNI is a co-production between Paco Cinematografica, Vision Distribution, and Neo Art Producciones. It was made with support from the Lazio Region through Lazio Cinema International, co-financed by the European Union.
The story is focused on Lucio (Edoardo Pesce), a charismatic and progressive radio host, is married to Elena (Valentina Lodovini), a beautiful yet insecure woman emotionally dependent on her husband. Together they form a harmonious blended family—including Lucio’s first wife and daughter—and have a 9-year-old son, Blu (Daniele Scardini), who loves dressing in girls’ clothing. At home, Blu is free to express himself, thanks to the open-mindedness of his parents. But when he insists on wearing a Little Mermaid costume for the school play, his parents find themselves torn between encouraging his self-expression and protecting him from a potentially judgmental world.
