One of Austria’s most successful and enduring television formats, Lonely Hearts Club, is set to make its South African debut. Media company Indigenius has acquired the beloved format for adaptation, bringing its heartfelt storytelling and universal themes of love and connection to a new audience.
For over 25 years, Lonely Hearts Club has been a staple of Austrian television, with more than 200 successful broadcasts across various time slots, ranging from morning programming to late-night entertainment. Its timeless appeal and strong audience engagement have made it a standout in Austria’s TV landscape. Recognizing its potential, Indigenius has taken the initiative to introduce the format to South Africa, tailoring it to fit the local cultural nuances and audience preferences.
The initial adaptation will be produced in Afrikaans, reflecting the linguistic and cultural diversity of the South African market. If the format resonates with viewers, there are plans to expand into additional language versions to further broaden its reach. The production is a collaboration between Indigenius and Brainwave Productions, with well-known South African TV personality Anne Hirsch attached to the pilot episode. Early industry feedback has been promising, with several broadcasters already expressing interest in the format.
“Hardly any other program embodies such genuine honesty and simplicity as Lonely Hearts Club,” says Hans Spielthenner, Co-CEO of Indigenius. “An international adaptation has always been a dream of mine, and given the show’s remarkable success in Austria, we saw an exciting opportunity to bring this beloved format to South Africa. We believe its themes of love, hope, and resilience will resonate just as powerfully with South African audiences. Our commitment is to maintain the authenticity and charm that made the original so special while adapting it to a new cultural context.”
