Beta Fiction Spain teams with Atresmedia to adapt the Italian prison drama Mare Fuori
Spain’s Atresmedia has started shooting an adaptation of Italian prison drama Mare Fuori for its Atresplayer platform and will produce it in partnership with local prodco Beta Fiction.

The original series is produced by the Italian broadcaster Rai in collaboration with Picomedia and aired on Rai 2 and Rai Play. Atresmedia acquired the format, distributed globally by Germany’s Beta Film under the title The Sea Beyond, last May and will adapt it as Mar Afuera.

The original storyline revolves around young individuals confined in a juvenile correctional center on an island near Naples. It premiered in Italy in 2020 and has already completed four seasons, each comprising 12 episodes.

In Spain, the first season of Mar Afuera will consist of 8 episodes, starring Gabriel Guevara, Hugo Welzel, and Laura Simón.

Mar Afuera marks the debut Spanish series produced by Beta Fiction Spain, established last year by Beta Film. It is overseen by Mercedes Gamero and Pablo Nogueroles, who previously held positions at Atresmedia Cine and Warner Bros Pictures International Spain, respectively. The company operates as a joint venture with Germany’s Beta Fiction, which also maintains a presence in Spain through its division Beta Entertainment Spain.
