American commercial broadcaster ABC has set an early August premiere for the launch of its reality competition series Castaways.
Produced by Hollywood-based Nomad Entertainment, the series will follow 12 people – ranging in age from 20 to 62 – as they’re individually dropped throughout an expanse of islands in the South Pacific and challenged to survive among washed-up luggage, scattered resources and abandoned structures.
The series will test the need for companionship under extreme circumstances and will document the action as the individuals learn there are other castaways spread across the Indonesian islets. Contestants, however, will not be made aware of how many castaways there are, their locations or when they will be rescued.
To leave the remote islands, contestants must persevere long enough to be rescued or quit.
Castaways will also feature flashback documentary segments that demonstrate the haunting parallels of the lives they’ve left behind. Grant Kahler, Emmy-nominated producer, serves as show runner. Castaways debuts Aug. 7 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
